- Austin and Searle’s theory of speech acts: direct and

indirect speech acts, constatives and performatives,

felicity conditions, locutionary act, illocutionary force

and perlocutionary effect

- Grice’s cooperative principle and maxims

- Conventional and conversational implicature

- Sperber and Wilson’s relevance theory

- Leech’s theory of politeness: politeness principle and maxims

- Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness: positive and negative face, face-saving and face-threatening acts, positive and negative politeness strategies

- Speech events, conversational analysis and preference structure: concept of floor, turn-taking, transition relevance place (TRP), adjacency pairs
