Declarative knowledge: a grounding in fundamental concepts of English grammar, phonology and lexis. Procedural knowedge: 'entry-level' ability to apply these concepts when analysing spoken or written texts.

Using a structural approach, the first part of this course consists of an analytical and theoretical introduction to English morphology and syntax. The functions and categories of English language from morpheme level to sentence level are examined. The second part of the course introduces basic concepts for analysing English phonology and lexis.

PROGRAMME:
           
A)  STRUCTURAL GRAMMAR
1.       The elements of a simple sentence (see Nelson, Chapter 1)  
2.       Words and word classes (see Nelson, Chapter 2)
3.       Phrases (see Nelson, Chapter 3)
4.       Sentences and clauses (see Nelson, Chapter 4)
            Morphology: free and bound morphemes, derivational and inflectional   
      morphemes, allomorphs (see Yule, pp.62-67).
B) VOICE 
1.   Consonants and their three variables: i) voiced and voiceless sounds, ii) place of     articulation and iii) manner of articulation. Vowels: monophthongs and diphthongs.   Phonemic symbols (see Yule, Chapter 4)
      2. Variation and allophones. Minimal pairs. Syllables and clusters. Aspects of connected speech: assimilation and elision. Definitions of stress and intonation (see Yule, Chapter 5).
 C) LEXIS
      1.   Word formation processes: affixes, infixes, etymology, coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, backformation, conversion and acronyms (see Yule, Chapter 6)
      2.   Paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes. Synonymy, antonymy and hyponymy.  Homophones and Homonyms. Polysemy. Collocations and multi-word units (e.g., idioms) (see Yule, Chapter 10).
