The course consists of an introduction to pragmatics. The main areas covered are:

- Pragmatics contrasted with semantics - literal meaning and the message model of communication
- Deixis

- Entailment and Presupposition
- Speech Act theory
- Grice’s Cooperative Principle and Implicature
- Politeness theories  
- Conversation and Preference Structure
